Honey is very good for you, but you must know that not all Honey is created equal. Before I go into the many Health Benefits of Honey, I want to first share with you several different types of Honey, so you can be sure you are only getting the best out there. Different Types of Honey Honey Just because you are buying “Honey”, doesn’t mean it is truly “All Natural”. Most honey on today’s market is processed, leaving out all of the good stuff, which is the reason why you would want honey in the first place! Commercial Honey (the typical Honey bear you see on store shelves) is treated with an intensive heating process that destroys the nutrients of Honey. Don’t always trust your Local Honey either, since many of them will use very little local honey, and...

Health Benefits of Agave Nectar

Posted by on Feb 15, 2010 in Health, Nutrition | Comments Off on Health Benefits of Agave Nectar

Agave Nectar is a wonderful Sugar Replacement! Agave Nectar Blue Agave Nectar is the most common species of Agave plants. If you buy Agave Nectar, chances are they are from the Blue Agave plants. The two most common types of Agave nectar is either “Light”, “Amber”, or “Dark”. The Light Agave Nectar has less heating and a more thorough filtration process, which makes a more mild and neutral flavored product. The Dark Agave Nectar is filtered less, and what’s left in the syrup allows for it to have a stronger taste to it, comparable to maple syrup. The Darker the Agave Nectar, the less processed it is said to be. For me personally, I would rather have a product in its most raw and natural form. Health Benefits Agave Nectar has a low glycemic index. This allows for sweetness...

Asparagus

Posted by on Jan 28, 2010 in Nutrition | 4 comments

Asparagus is a high in antioxidants, Vitamin K (decreases dark circles, increases bone mass among other things) and Folate. It helps with the prevention of hair loss, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), high blood pressure, fatigue, toothaches (who knew?), kidney stones, and even prevents some cancers(especially lung cancer). Asparagus is great for women in particular. It helps with menstrual cramps, nursing mothers for helping with milk production, and because it is high in Folate/Folic Acid, it can help prevent birth defects like Spina Bifida (incompletely formed spinal chord). Asparagus isn’t known for being the cheapest veggie out there, but if you ask me, it’s definitely worth the cost for all of the benefits it provides for your body. How to eat Asparagus? I recommend either baking or steaming this to get the most out of it’s nutrients. Feel free to follow...

Twinkie’s Challenge: Say “No Way!” to Fried foods

Posted by on Jan 4, 2010 in Nutrition, Twinkie's Challenge, Weight Loss | 3 comments

If you can do one thing for your health..stop eating fried foods. What is considered  “Fried foods”? Anything cooked in a lot of grease or oil, at very high temperatures. Fried foods are things like french fries, most potato chips, onion rings, doughnuts, and in most cases, anything with the word “fried” in the title (though many products can be sneaky with their names!). Why try to give up Fried foods? Fried foods have little to no nutritional value, and if you have learned anything from my posts, your body needs good-for-you-fuel to survive and function properly. Those fried onion rings? Not helping you in any way. Fried foods are drenched in unhealthy oils-most commonly used are Canola, Vegetable, or Peanut oil-that are not good for your body. These oils become even more harmful for you when they are...

Vitamin C

Posted by on Dec 31, 2009 in Nutrition | Comments Off on Vitamin C

Vitamin C is one of the most popular Vitamins, and for good reason too. Why you need Vitamin C Vitamin C is an antioxidant (nutrients and enzymes), which is known for preventing things like cataracts, arthritis, stroke, heart disease (may help with high blood pressure),  and cancer. Vitamin C may also help those who are diabetic (by regulating your blood sugar levels), or those who have asthma (helps with the airways in your lungs).   Sick Much? Vitamin C also helps you with your immune system. This is great for those who have a cold, since it not only helps you recover faster, but also helps with the severity of your cold that you already have. I find myself taking extra Vitamin C in my diet when I feel like I am coming down with something so I can...

Posted by on Dec 21, 2009 in Health, Nutrition | 2 comments

Nutrition. So many words and thoughts come to mind… I started eating extremely healthy and began exercising on a regular basis, but I wasn’t losing any weight. Turns out, I was consuming quite a bit of calories, and If it weren’t for my daily exercise routine, I probably would have been gaining weight! Yes, gaining weight on carrots and apples. Ok, not just on carrots and apples, but I think you get my point. What I have come to find is, our bodies are like a math problem. We can figure out how many calories you need each day living your life and maintain your current weight. You can also figure out by simple math how to lose or gain weight. If you want to lose a pound of fat, you need to either burn 3,500 extra calories or...
